GOYCOOCHEA AND MORRIS REIGN SUPREME

The 2019 SoCal Pairs Regional are over and after a blistering nine-hour day, the 20 SoCal seeds headed to the State Championship Individual Tournament have been decided.

The regional was capped off Friday, May 3 by another absolutely impressive showing from Grossmont's No. 2 pair of Alexcis Morris and Ashlee Goycoochea. The GC pair captured the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title and came out on fire to grab the SoCal Regional No. 1 seed. The pair did have some help from forfeits around the bracket and struggled early in the championship game, but really just performed when it mattered.

Can the pair continue their dominance?

Goycoochea and Morris are also in the Team State Tournament and have at least two matches that day (three, if Grossmont College advances to the championship match) and will have three on Friday (in the pool stage) and potentially up to four on Saturday if they make it out of the pool stage and continue to advance. Burnout could be the biggest issue.

The GC women's team is scheduled to play El Camino College in its opening match Thursday, May 9 at the Team State Tournament at 9:00 a.m., followed by Gavilan College later in the day (1:00 p.m.). Grossmont's recent greeting this season with El Camino (March 2, 2019) found the Griffins with a 4-1 win, but Gavilan remains unknown. If Grossmont advances to the final, it will be played at 4:30 p.m.

Also qualifying for the State Championship Individual Tournament is GC's first pair Aofiaolela Faa'agi and Desiree Elizondo. The two move into Friday as the #7 seed.
