2017 CCCAA Baseball State Champions!!!

The Griffins baseball team has done the incredible - they are the 2017 CCCAA State Champions. (click here for CCCAA Baseball Tournament Central)  Grossmont entered the 2017 State Finals as the number #1 team representing the southern region and began play on Saturday May 27th versus the #2 representative from the north region Ohlone.  Tim Holdgrafer from La Jolla High School was brilliant on the hill allowing just 3 runs in 8 innings pitched and striking out 12 batters (click for box score).  Hayden Shenefield entered the game in the 9th inning picking up the save and securing game 1 for the Griffins.  Final score: Griffins 4 over Ohlone 3!  The victory led to a showdown at 2:00 PM on Sunday May 28th with the #1 seed from the north and defending state champions Santa Rosa Community College.  Hayden Shenefield was the story of the game pitching a complete game shut-out with 4 strike-outs and scattering just six hits.  The Griffins defeated the defending champs 3-0 (click for box score) and thus advancing automatically to the Championship Finals on Monday May 29th.  Third baseman Justen Burkey from San Pasquel High School went 2-4 with an RBI, while shortstop Michael Diffley from Granite Hills High School added 2 hits with 2 runs scored.  The Griffins set themselves up perfectly going into Monday as they had only used two pitchers total in the two days.  Santa Rosa on the other hand was forced to play El Camino in a loser bracket game on Sunday evening.  The game turned out to be an exciting match-up as Santa Rosa came back from a 3 from deficit and forced an extra inning eventually winning 8-5 in 10 innings.  The Championship Finals began at 11:00 AM on Monday and was another fantastic ball game (click for box score) as Santa Rosa defeated Grossmont 5-4 forcing an immediate if needed game.  The Griffins came out swinging in the championship finale with the big man at 1st base Noah Strohl from La Jolla High School leading the way.  Strohl belted a two run home run in the second inning and just continued swinging a hot stick as he finished 3-5 with two doubles, a home run, and 4 RBI's.  The Griffins offense proved too much for the Bear Cubs as they pulled ahead late in a very closely contested game winning the State Championship with a final score of 10-6. (click for box score)  The Griffins finish the season with an overall record of 38-8-1 (22-2 in the PCAC) (9-1 in Post Season).  Hayden Shenefield was named the obvious choice for 2017 State Championship Finals Most Valuable Player.  Hayden picked up the save in game 1 pitching the final inning, then he threw a complete game shut-out in game 2 and even closed the final contest on Monday when he entered again and pitched the final two innings of the Championship Game.  Randy Abshier earns his first State Championship as a coach; this is the 1st CCCAA State Championship in baseball for Grossmont College, the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, San Diego City and County. Essentially, this Championship means that the 2017 Grossmont College baseball team will go down in history as not only the 1st team from the college and conference to win a State Championship but it also means that the 2017 team is also currently the greatest CCCAA baseball team in Pacific Athletic Coast Conference History!!!
