DOUBLE HEADER IN THE G-HOUSE

Friday night in the G-House, after a long week of classes and practice, men's volleyball and and men's basketball hosted back-to-back contests.

Men's volleyball served up the first match of the evening, inviting the Antelope Valley College Marauders into the G-House. The match began at 5:00 p.m. with Matthew Jones, Kaman Curtis, Greg Michael, Bryson Moore, and Gabriel Tai in the starting line-up. The first point killed by Matthew Jones 1-0.

Antelope Valley rallied an 8 point run to take the lead 2-9, and from there, the Griffins chased the Marauders through the 1st set 15-25, totaling 8 kills, 9 errors and 21 total attacking attempts.

The two teams battled it out in the 2nd set, as each held leads and lost leads, but the Griffins were victorious in their 28 attacking attempts 14 of which were killed. The Griffins and the Marauders move into the 3rd set tied 1-1.

The Griffins played their strongest attacking set in the 3rd, totaling 15 kills, 4 errors and 29 attempts in the attack, however it wasn't enough for the G-House, as Antelope Valley captured the 3rd set 23-25 and the 4th set 20-25.

Leaders of the match included Gabriel Tai with 13 points and Mathew Perez with 8. The men's volleyball are 0-2 so far this season and scheduled to play at Fullerton College Friday, February 9th versus Moorpark College and Santa Monica College.

Following men's volleyball were the men of Griffin basketball (16-7), hosting neighbor San Diego Mesa College (5-16).

Starters Ronald Blain, David Wheeler, Oscar Limon, Josh Moran and Bryce Parsons ran up the lead 23-8 at the 10:32 minute mark of the 1st half. The Olympians found scoring leader Morrie Neeley (14 points) to close the gap. By the end of the first half, Bryce Parson had 3 assists, 4 rebounds and a total of 16 points for the Griffins to take a tight lead of 35-32.

Slam dunk to start the 2nd half! Ronald Blain with the play. The Griffins run up the score, 51-40, to take an 11 point lead. At the 8:24 minute the Griffins make it a 14 point lead, with San Diego Mesa struggling to catch up. Slowly but surely, the Olympians close the gap again scoring themselves within 4 points in the G-House (72-68). The Griffins hold the Olympians off by 5 in the final minute (77-72), and top off the game with an extra basket to win 79-72. Another 14 points for Bryce Parsons in the 2nd half, and Ronald Blain and David Wheeler both with 13.

The Griffins move forward to play San Diego City Wednesday, February 7th at 7:00 p.m.
