CLIPPINGER WITH ATHLETE OF THE MONTH!

The month of March saw the spring sports kick into high gear, with some teams claiming their spots at the top of the standings and others trying to knock them off their perch.  The top athletes in the conference were on full display, with a number making a case for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Athlete-of-the-Month. 

Two men and two women emerged as the top performers for the month of March, with San Diego City's Hector Carreon and Palomar's Jacob Montes representing the men and Desert's Lauren Robinson and Grossmont's Gabby Clippinger representing the women.

ATHLETES-OF-THE-MONTH (MEN)

Hector Carreon, San Diego City College (baseball)

Carreon batted .442 in March while driving in 14 runs with three doubles and three triples. He also stole five bases and scored 14 runs to help San Diego City to a 7-3 record for the month. 

Carreon had his best day of the month when he went 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple, an RBI and four runs-scored in a 22-7 win at Imperial Valley on March 19.  He is currently 18th in the state with a .395 batting average. 

Jacob Montes, Palomar College (golf)

Montes had a sensational month for the Comets, winning medalist honors twice while boasting a 73.7 scoring average.  Montes was even par over a span of three rounds, shooting +1 (73) at Tukwet Canyon, even par (72) at Torrey Pines North and -1 (71) at Soboba Springs in an eight-day span from March 11 through March 18.  He currently leads the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in scoring average as Palomar leads the conference race by two games over College of the Desert after a 25-3 start in PCAC play. 

ATHLETES-OF-THE-MONTH (WOMEN)

Lauren Robinson, College of the Desert (softball)

College of the Desert's Lauren Robinson was a solid performer for the Roadrunners in the circle, at the plate and at the hot corner this past month as Desert captured six wins in March. She the month reaching base 30 times in 46 plate appearances. The month included 19 totals hits, nine doubles and two home runs for a .528 batting average. Robinson had 16 RBI's in her 14 games that COD played, which also included eight runs-scored, six bases-on-balls, four hit-by-pitches and two stolen bases. In the circle Robinson appeared in 12 games, starting nine of them earning four wins versus three loses and one no decision, she struck out 36 batters in 55.1 innings of work.  Robinson ended the month of March with the No. 5 batting average in the state.

Gabby Clippinger, Grossmont College (softball)

Clippinger had a big month for the Griffins, batting .448 while going 13-for-29 at the plate. In addition, she had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage during the month in 29 attempts.  Clippinger's month was highlighted by a four-game stretch where she went 9-for-9 with four runs-scored and five RBI.  Her biggest performance was a 4-for-4, three RBI game in a 13-11 win against Mt. San Jacinto on March 15.
