WOMEN'S BADMINTON PLAYERS QUALIFY FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Grossmont College women's badminton team traveled to San Diego Mesa College on April 27, 2018 for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Individual Championships.

Grossmont College had three players finish in the top eight in singles, and two doubles team place in the final six doubles to move on to the CCCAA State Championships individual tournament May 11-12, 2018 at San Diego City College.

The GC Athlete of the Year and the CCCAA Athlete of the Month (March), sophomore Yukari Naono from Tokyo, finished on top in the singles and doubles event. Naono won the singles title, beating her teammate Michiho Kobayashi, and the doubles title beating Irvine Valley's Michelle Chen and Chien Tu.

Freshman Michiho Kobayashi from Toyko held the conference honor in doubles alongside Naono. Kobayashi placed second in the singles event as well, just above teammate Megumi Tonouchi.

With a third place finish in singles, Megumi Tonouchi moves forward to the CCCAA State Championship. In doubles, Tonouchi and partner Ryo Fujimoto, another freshman from Tokyo, move on as third of six.

As a team, Grossmont College captured second in the PCAC with a 7-2 overall record falling short to Irvine Valley who finished 8-1 overall. Unfortunately the second place finish in conference did not qualify GC for the CCCAA team State Championships.
