AN INTERVIEW WITH BADMINTON'S FUMIKO SEKI

Full Interview with Fumiko Seki.

International student and badminton player Fumiko Seki agrees that returning to Grossmont College in the fall is too soon.

Originally from Japan, Seki understands that the Coronavirus affects separate populations similarly.

"In Japan...they are getting back to normal life, but actually the number of people who have Corona is increrasing again, so for fall semester, it is too soon..."

She hopes to return still with enough time to practice before another spring season of badminton begins. Seki was training to be a champion of California before her 2020 season was interrupted.

Seki won 1st place for singles at the annual Grossmont College Badminton Tournament Friday, February 21, 2020. She won the title against Sami from SD City College who was the 2019 state champion in singles. Seki also placed 2nd with partner Lea Hazel in the doubles competition (pictured).

With a year of eligibility reinstated because of COVID-19, Seki returns to badminton spring 2021 as a freshman. Although it's unclear how the season will play out, the Grossmont College Athletics Department is optimistic that Seki will have some version of a competitive season.
