Basketball guard Chiara Mattern is honored as the female athlete of the year at the 57th Annual Grossmont College ASGC Awards Ceremony.

The ASGC Awards Ceremony was held at Grossmont College on April 17, 2019. The student nomination criteria for Athlete of the Year included:

  • Currently attending classes during the 2018-19 academic year
  • Minimum of 3.25 cumulative gpa
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, which includes respectful treatment of others, integrity, character, ethics and effective communication
  • Made outstanding contributions to the "Quality of Campus Life" for students by active involvement in campus activities, athletics, organizations, and/or clubs

Interim head coach Brionna Baker nominated Mattern for this year's award. She states, "The Grossmont College Women's Basketball program would like to nominate Chiara Mattern as the 2019 ASGC Athlete of the Year. Chiara has exemplified what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at Grossmont College.

The women's basketball program places a heavy emphasis on successful behaviors. We want our players to be successful on the court and in the classroom. Honesty, integrity, hard work, effort, mental-toughness and two-way communication are some of the characteristics we attribute to success. When these student-athletes graduate we want them to carry the values instilled in them to their next college or university, work place, and throughout life. Our goal is to use basketball as tool to produce success and contributing women in society. Chiara Mattern does a great job displaying these behaviors through her actions.

Chiara is highly competitive on the court and in the classroom. Chiara shows up on time and ready to work. She currently has a 3.7 GPA and looks to raise it with a strong finish in her last semester. Chiara works equally hard in practice; leading with action as she completes every drill with maximum effort. The intensity at which she plays, paired with work outside of practice has transferred to her performance in games. This season, Chiara led our team in scoring and three-point shooting attempts and percentage. She also led the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference - South in scoring, averaging 23.1 points per game.

Chiara is both mentally and physically tough. She was able to be successful despite playing with a torn meniscus for the majority of the season. When faced with the knowledge of the injury she had a tough decision on whether to continue to compete or sit out the remainder of the season. Her competitive spirit and awareness of her role on the team propelled her to make the conscious decision to finish out the season.

Chiara effectively communicates and is respectful of coaching staff. When addressed she responds, when directed she does. Due to her injury she has missed a few practices, all of which were communicated to staff promptly and effectively. She conducts herself in a professional manor. Our staff greatly appreciates her effort to communicate because it leads to greater understanding and the ability to grow.

Chiara is beginning to reap the benefits of her selflessness, work ethic, skill set, and academic standing. She is currently being recruited by four-year universities because of the behaviors that contribute to being a successful student-athlete. Our program is extremely proud of her accomplishments and representation of Grossmont College, Grossmont College Athletics, specifically Grossmont College Women's Basketball."

Congratulations to Chiara Mattern for capturing the Athlete of the Year Award at Grossmont College during the 2018-19 academic year.
