October 1, 2019 was the official start of the Griffin women's basketball season. Grossmont College Athletics is excited for the return of Head Coach Karen Caires this season after a year of leave.
Caires states, "We have a really young team this year, but we're bright eyed and committed to learning. Our roster holds 13 freshman, which means more growth and development."
#23 Hailey Dominguez and #5 Lilian Akintonde join Grossmont's squad this year as students from local high schools (Mater Dei Catholic and El Cajon Valley respectively), as well as Aaliyah Stone from Santana High. #33 Tisha Appelquist and #3 Angel Saleh are local incoming kids from San Diego too, who bring a lot of talent and personality to the court.
#22 Rian Fullmer traveled further to play for Grossmont this season. Fullmer is freshman forward out of Saratoga Springs, Utah. She stands at 5'10 in the forward position. Cal State Northridge bounce-back Mariyah Howard is also in the G-House this season. She's a 5'7 guard/forward out of Helix High.
Grossmont's single sophomore is #10 Lesley Black. She competed in the 2018-19 season. Also returning is #1 Leanna Watson (after a medical redshirt in the 2018-19 season). The coaches of the women's basketball team are excited for the emergence of Watson this winter!
Coaching alongside Karen Caires is assistant Megan Trammel. Trammel is a Griffin alumni. She competed for Grossmont between 2006 and 2008 before transferring to UC San Diego. Both coaches will be busy this season!
The Grossmont women's basketball 2019-20 schedule is loaded, with early games against Fullerton and Irvine Valley Colleges November 1 & 2. The women's crossover January 2 & 3 is expected to be very challenging for the Griffins also.
Conference competition opens January 10, with Grossmont competing with Palomar College. Grossmont competes within the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference under the California Community College Athletic Association.
