It was Grossmont women's soccer opening game Tuesday, August 28. Santiago Canyon College was in the G-House for a 1:00 p.m. start. Sunny and hot, both teams stepped onto the field to compete.

The first half found the Griffin women connecting passes and creating goal scoring opportunities. Most notably, GC's #9 Julia Hartman found a high speed 1v1 with SC's goalkeeper, ending in a hard tackle and both women in the turf. The game remained 0-0.

It was a scoreless game until the 35', when SC's #20 forward Tara Hansel capitalized on an assist from teammate #5 Angelica Ortega. It was an unfortunate goal against GC's starting goalkeeper Jessica Schotte, who saw 90 minutes this game.

GC defender and key player, #14 Jessica Garcia, took a hard foul just before the half requiring her to step off for the remainder of the game. #28 Jessica McKenny filled Garcia's shoes in the center defense.

The Hawks slotted a second goal (#3 Luli Bethencourt) to take the lead 2-0 by half-time, and finally both teams took 10 to regroup.

It was a busy second half for GC goalkeeper Jessica Schotte; Santiago Canyon ripped 12 shots on goal, only 2 of which were scored (70', 90'). GC #24 Basia Llamas denied many additional scoring opportunities for the opponent, and was a key player in this game.

Impact players this season for the Griffins include (but not limited to):

#24 Basia Llamas
Llamas is a strong and smart player. Her decision making on defensive delay vs tackle is very strong. She is excellent in the air, and will be a consistent starter in the center back position this season.

#9 Julia Hartman
Hartman is fast, aggressive and hungry for an attack. She creates many combinations among teammates, and finds herself behind defensive lines very often. She can be recognized by her light purple hair

#15 Madison Altomare
Altomare is GC's utililty. She can play in almost any position, and do so with success. You will find Altomare with 90 minutes each game.
