April 9, 2018 - The men's and women's swim and drive team at Grossmont College traveled to Riverside County, CA last weekend for the annual Riverside College Mini Invitational.

In addition to Grossmont, Rio Hondo, Citrus, Riverside City, Palomar, San Diego Mesa, Southwestern and Saddleback competed Friday, April 6, 2018, in the invitational. 

Female swimmers Jasmine Miller and Carli Willis swam a great meet, similarly to male swimmers Brandon Persky and Jeffrey Jovellano.

Jasmine Miller, a freshman from Valhalla high school, won both the 50 Y and 100 Y freestyle races. Miller competed against over 30 swimmers in each race. Her 1st place time for the 50 Y free was 25.32, and held 1st at 55.21 in the 100 Y free. Both times are personal bests for Miller this season. Altogether, Miller scored her squad 40 points during the invitational.

Carli Willis, a freshman from West Hills high School, beat out 12 swimmers Friday to win the 500 Y freestyle race at 5:43.01. She continued to place 3rd (of 8) in the 400 Y IM with a 5:13.65, which was a 6 second drop from here previous best time of the season! Altogether, Willis scored her squad 36 points during the invitational Friday. She currently holds Grossmont College's record time for the 200 meter butterfly with a 2:29.01, breaking the previous school record by more than 10 seconds.

Miller and Willis lead Grossmont's women's team to a total of 222 points, placing fifth in the meet.

On the men's side, a fourth place finish with a total of 369.5 points was recorded.

Brandon Persky scored Grossmont a whopping 52 points at Friday's meet-up. Persky, a sophomore from Valhalla high school, placed 1st (of 15) in the 200 Y breaststroke race with a 2.15.94, 2nd in the 100 Y breaststroke (1.01.01) and 4th in the 200 Y IM (2.09.96).

Likewise Jeffrey Jovellano, a freshman from Mater Dei high school, placed 4th (of 11) in the 100 Y backstroke (1.07.27) scoring 15 points, 7th in the 200 Y backstroke (2.32.75) and 10th in the 200 Y freestyle (2.03.01) for a total of 34 points in Friday's invitational.

Combined, the Grossmont men and women's swim and dive teams totaled 591.5 points, qualifying for a fourth place finish out of the 8 schools competing at the Riverside Mini Invitational. This was the last swim for the griffins before the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships scheduled in 2 weeks, April, 19-21, at Palomar College.
