EL CAJON — In a battle of two Top 20 squads in the State of California, the 16th-ranked Mira Costa Spartans and 12th-ranked Grossmont Griffins did not disappoint the fans in attendance at The Griffin Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Grossmont (7-3, 2-0 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference) won the match three sets to one (25-27, 25-14, 25-18, 25-20) to narrow the undefeated teams in the conference to only three.
For the match, the Griffins had a hitting percentage of .232 while Mira Costa (7-4, 1-1 PCAC) hit at a .146 pace.
In the opening set, the teams traded points to start the match. In the middle portion of the set, Grossmont went on a four-point run. Eventually, the Griffins led 23-17, Mira Costa was not going to just lay down. They fought back and tied the match up at 23-all. Both teams scored to make it 24-all, CCCWVCA Player of the Week Madi Bogle got a kill to make it 25-24 GC. Sadly for those cheering for the Green and Gold, Mira Costa went on a three point run to take the set 27-25.
With the second set tied at 5-all, Grossmont went on a 8-2 run before the Spartans called a timeout. The Griffins went on a 12-7 run to close out the set. GC continued the run to start out the fourth set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. That is when the Spartans would begin a run of their own. Going on a 8-4 run before the Griffins called a timeout at 9-8 MCC. Both teams traded points until 12-all before Grossmont would close out the set on a 13-6 run to take a two-set to one lead.
The fourth set began just like the first three had, close at the beginning, before Grossmont closed out the match with a 9-4 run to win the deciding set 25-20.
Chelsee Trendler had 30 assists, six kills and ten digs to power the Griffin offense. Bogle had a match-high 22 kills and three blocks. Joining Bogle in double figure kills for the Griffins was Brooke Miller and her 10 kills.
Bogle, Miller and Trendler were joined by Aly Guise in the .300 club. Libero Lauren Dumo (12), Rylee Suggett (10) and Trendler all registered ten or more digs in the match as well. Suggett was very lethal at the service line gaining seven aces on the night.
The Griffins will be off until next Wednesday when they travel to Southwestern for a 5:00 p.m. match in The Den.
