Men's Volleyball Wins 1st Match of Year

The Santa Monica College Corsairs volleyball team won their first match of the season in a hard-fought contest against Grossmont College played at Fullerton College on Friday, Feb 11th.

In the first game of a double-header, that would have the Corsairs playing both Grossmont and Fullerton Colleges, the Corsairs got out to a fast start and a 2-0 lead.

Grossmont College stormed back in the 3rd and 4th sets before jumping out to a lead in the 5th and deciding set.  The Corsairs, led by Grant Hall #16, the Middle Blocker, came back in the final moments of the Match to retake the lead and seal the victory. Mason Johnson led the team with kills and blocks.

The second match of the day, against host Fullerton College, did not go as well for the Corsairs.  After falling behind 2-0 after two sets, The Corsairs got back on track for the 3rd set, but it was not enough to win the match and SMC fell 3-1.

August Bernota, #13, took the opportunity from the bench and had almost a perfect game with high hitting percentage from the service line and some good kills and solo blocks.

The win against Grossmont was Coach Liran Zamir's first win as Head Coach for the Corsairs. Follow along on our website, www.smccorsairs.com for more updates on the Men's Volleyball program.
