COD Football rolls in drubbing of the Griffins, 48-7

COD (7-2; 3-1) hashed out 3 decades worth of frustration on a visiting team that has given them fits since the early 1990's, responding in a big way after last week's tough loss by knocking off the Grossmont Griffins of La Mesa (3-6; 1-3), 48-7.

This afternoon's margin of victory, 41 points, is the most lopsided victory over the Griffins in program history for the Roadrunners and the most lopsided victory in Palm Desert. The next closest margin of victory in this head-to-head series was 38 points, in week six of the 2007 season, when the Roadrunners went on the road and defeated Grossmont in El Cajon, 66-28. Sophomore quarterback Cesar Vela (Rancho Mirage H.S.) grabbed his fourth straight 200+ yards passing game, throwing for 255 yards and 3 scores and was the leading rusher for Desert, with 40 yards on 9 carries. Freshman defensive end Gerliaer Ervin (Baltimore (MD) Paul Laurence Dunbar) had 6 total tackles, 5 assisted, 1.5 sacks totaling a loss of 6 yards and a quarterback hurry.

The Roadrunners competed against the Grossmont Griffins for the first time in program history in 1965 and have an 8-17-3 overall record against the Griffins. Desert has a 5-7-1 record at home in this series.
