Coyotes close out 2022 season with loss to Grossmont

EL CAJON — The Grossmont College Griffins closed out the Cuyamaca College Coyote's season with a 3-0 sweep that took a brisk 59 minutes to complete. 

The win for the top ranked in Southern California Griffins (20-3, 15-0 PCAC) is their 18th consecutive victory. It is the longest since a 19-game streak during the 2016 season. 

 
 

In the first set, it was a series of three to four points in Grossmont's favor then two for Cuyamaca (1-15, 1-15 PCAC). 

In the middle set, the Coyotes raced out to a 3-0 lead. Grossmont would go on a four-point run highlighted by a pair of Grossmont kills. Cuyamaca went on a four-point string to take a 7-4 lead. That triggered a timeout by Grossmont. On the other side of the timeout, Miller kill got the ball back for Grossmont. Unfortunately, Cuyamaca could not string several points together. The Griffins got the ball right back and got another seven straight points from their service line.. Cuyamaca got a side out for the final time in the set at 22-9. Three kills by the Griffins closed the set out for the Green and Gold. 

The final set saw Grossmont lose the first point but bounced right back and scored the next four. Cuyamaca got a point to break the streak. Another four-point run by Grossmont was interrupted by a Coyote timeout. Then two points went to Cuyamaca before a service error gave the serving duties back to Grossmont. Grossmont went on a 7-3 run to make it 17-7. Several unforced errors by the Coyotes pushed the score up to 21-7 in favor of the Griffins. The two district rivals traded points, then Cuyamaca was given a point on an attack error to make it 23-10. Kills by Grossmont ace and the match point wrapped up the match in favor of Grossmont.
