Griffins drop a close one to Palomar

El Cajon — One thing that will always help a championship caliber team is to never give up, even if it is late.

That is exactly what the Palomar Comets (27-9, 17-4 PCAC) did on Thursday, April 21 as the Comets defeated the Griffins (21-13, 14-7 PCAC) 7-6 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game at Noel Michelson Field.

Four Griffins posted multi-hit games as part of the 13 hits attack.

Jake Sargent (4-3) did yeoman's work on the mound going seven and two-thirds innings allowing 10 hits, a walk and seven runs (all unearned) while striking out eight.  It was the fifth time he has struck out eight or more batters this season.

How it happened:

  • Palomar got on the board first with a solo run in the top of the first.  The Green and Gold came back and scored a run themselves to tie the game up.
  • Grossmont put three runs up in the second inning.  Jake Allen, Skyler Agnew, Jared Pratt, Ethan Caschetta all registered hits in the inning.
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Grossmont allowed a runner to reach via an error which opened the door for what would end up being two runs.
  • The eighth inning is where the game was won/lost.  Grossmont dropped a fly ball which would have been the second out.  Palomar would then get four straight hits to plate four runs.
  • Grossmont tried to get some runs back but could only manage to score once.
  • The Griffins loaded the bases against Palomar's closer, but could not cash in.

Griffin Notes:

  • Of the six runs, five were driven in by Caschetta (2) and Pratt (3).
  • Grossmont left 10 runners on base, the 13th time this season they have left at least 10 runners.
  • Sargent lowered his ERA to 2.99 with his seven innings of no earned runs.
  • Palomar clinched their 10th PCAC Championship since 2000.
