GRIFFIN HEARS NAME CALLED IN LA DURING MLB DRAFT

Los Angeles -- Former San Diego Padre turned Texas Ranger General Manager Chris Young knows good pitching when he sees it. He was in the Big Leagues for 13 years with different five teams.

He and the Rangers scouting department saw his dominating velocity in the Fall so much that they took Andrew Owens, a 6' 1" RHP, in the 14th round. He was on the 2022 squad but didn't see any game time due to having Tommy John surgery.

Owens, signed with Baylor but bounced back to Grossmont College in the Fall. In November, Owens received a scholarship and signed with San Diego State for Fall 2022. During the first practice for the 2022 Season at Grossmont, Owens heard a pop. That pop was his UCL and he underwent Tommy John Surgery and his rehab is going well.

His fastball topped out at 97 mph with a good slider and changeup as well. The Turlock native will sign with the Rangers sometime early next week.

"If there are any players that think they can play at the next level, they should contact Randy (Abshier) and Rob (Aguirre)." Owens said of the great coaching at Grossmont College.

Abshier said of Owens, "Andrew was a great asset to the program and his performance elevated others in the program. When you get a player of that caliber, it brings scouts and recruiters around which gives others an opportunity to shine or be recognized."
