SAN DIEGO – The Griffins opened a three game weeklong series against the San Diego City College Knights with a 6-5 victory at Morley Field on Tuesday, April 4.

Freshman Luke Mansy led the Griffin (12-11,5-6 PCAC) offense going 2-for-5 with a run scored and four runs driven in.

Both clubs went scoreless in the first two innings.  The only trouble was in the second inning when SDCC (15-13, 5-9 PCAC) had two runners reach base, only to have the Griffin's Ace Kyle Dobyns (5-1) come roaring back and register back-to-back strikeouts to close out the threat.

Dobyns went six innings allowing just four hits and three unearned runs, while striking out a season-high ten batters.  The ten strikeouts ties a career-high for the Sophomore who also turned in double digits last year against Mesa (3/10/22).

Brodie Romero led off the top of the third with a walk.  Noah Lane followed with a base hit up the middle to move Romero to second.  Skyler Agnew singled to right to load the bases.  Romero came scampering home when the Knights threw a wild pitch, which also allowed Lane and Agnew to move up 90 feet.  After a strikeout, UCONN commitment Zavien Watson was intentionally walked to reload the bases.  That is when Mansy came up and launched an offering over the 10-foot wall in right field for an opposite field grand slam and a 5-0 Griffin lead.

Two innings later, the Griffins tacked on another run when City threw another wild pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Watson for the sixth (and ended up being the final) run of the day for the Griffins.

City would end up scoring three un-earned runs after a Griffin error with two outs to make it 6-3 after six innings.

City would add single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to bring them to the final.  Bradley Barkley would close the game out and gain his fifth save of the season.

Grossmont will host City on Thursday, April 6 for the first home game in a month.
