EL CAJON -- The Grossmont College Griffins are putting together what looks like might be a record-breaking season. Through five games the Griffins have scored 95+ points three times and 80's in the other two.

Daevin Celaya led the Griffins (2-3) with 14 points against the Tartars (1-5) as the Griffins won 99-88 in non-conference action.

Six different Griffins posted double-figure scoring figures, that many Griffins in double-figures has not been seen since five Grossmont players were in that category on February 20, 2020 game against Palomar.

"We've been improving every game this season," head coach Doug Weber said after the game.

At the halfway mark of the first half, the Green and Gold were up one point (20-19). In just under a minute, Grossmont went on a quick 6-0 burst to expand the lead to 34-27 at the 4:30 mark. At the end the first half Grossmont lead 46-41.

The Griffins got the ball to start the second half and didn't waste any time scoring a bucket just 18 seconds in to take a seven-point lead at 48-41. Just over three minutes into the half, GC was up by eight points. Compton made a run to close the gap down to zero as they tied the game up at 58-all at the 14:23 mark.

That is when "the run" began. Every college basketball game features several runs, but there is always one run that is the turning point. Grossmont ran off an 18-5 run over a 4:22 span. Then there was another run for the Griffins when they went on a 11-6 run 3:40 span to give GC the 93-78 lead.

Grossmont's next game will be against Santa Ana as they continue their non-conference schedule. That game will be on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Bill Cook Gymnasium.
