GRIFFINS STAY UNBEATEN IN PCAC PLAY AFTER TIGHT GAME

CHULA VISTA — The Grossmont College Griffins remain undefeated in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play as they take down Southwestern 14-13 at the Southwestern Aquatic Center. 

Ryan Beery scored five times drew a penalty and had a pair of assists as the Griffins improved to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in PCAC play. Also scoring for the Green and Gold was Ryland Humphrey and Austin Wenzel with hat tricks. Raul Rico also threw a couple past the Southwestern keeper. The game winner was scored by Joey Asaro. 

Eric Bates had a steal and eight blocks in the win. 

The opening half saw both teams capture a 5-2 quarter victory, the Griffins got the first and the Jaguars (11-3, 1-1 PCAC) won the second to have the score all tied up at seven at intermission. 

Both squads got three goals in the third to make it 10-all at the end of 24 minutes. 

In the fourth quarter, Southwestern took an 11-10 lead, but then Grossmont went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-11 score. The Jaguars scored two late, but the Griffins went into the stall offense and came out with the win. The winning goal by Asaro was up on the top shelf where the good stuff is kept. 

Grossmont will travel to San Diego Mesa (2-6, 1-2 PCAC) next Wednesday (Oct. 19).
