Grossmont beach volleyball is #1 in the state, after defeating Long Beach in the Team State Championship.

It was a battle to get to the final match Thursday, May 9 at the Chula Vista Elite Training Center. GC competed with El Camino, Gavilan and finally Long Beach colleges eventually to capture the one and only first place position in California.

Grossmont first defeated El Camino 3-2, and then Gavilan 4-1. The final match against Long Beach was won at 3-1.

The final match against Long Beach did not finish. The Griffin women took down the Vikings immediately with the 2, 4 and 5 pairs before the 1s pair even began their third set. By that time, Grossmont had begun celebrating their victory.

This is the second state championship for Grossmont College women's beach volleyball team, headed by coach Jamie Ivers.

Ivers holds a 2016 state title, 2015 runner-up, and 2017 third place finish in addition to this year's championship. Ivers and her team also captured the conference championship this season for a two consecutive year run.

The beach team finished spring with a state and conference championship, with an overall record of 24-2, and the fun continues.

Friday, May 10 finds the beginning of the Pairs State Championship, where GC's 1s and 2s pair qualified.

Alexcis Morris and Ashlee Goycoochea hold the #1 regional seed as GC's 2s pair, and 1s pair Desiree Elizondo and Aofiaolela Faa'agi hold the #7 seed.

The pairs tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. Friday at the Chula Vista Elite Training Center. Parking is $5.00 and admission to the event is $12.00.
