EL CAJON – When the Grossmont College Baseball team met for the first time back in August, one of their goals was to make the CCCAA Regional playoffs.

Well, you can check that box off as the Griffins are the 22 seed in the new 24 team playoff bracket. Three teams from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference are continuing their seasons this weekend in the Regional playoffs.

"After only having 10 on-field practices prior to April, I'm very proud of this group of guys" head coach Randy Abshier said on Tuesday. "We've dealt with a tremendous amount of adversity this season. With all the rain, we only had just a handful of home games prior to April."

Handful would be generous. With the rains that fell during the soggy months of February and March, the team had four true home games (one game was a "home" game at Irvine Valley College as part of a doubleheader).

Another way of looking at it is the team is comfortable being on the road. Which is where they will be for however long the playoff run will last.

They start at the third seed Riverside City College. Should they defeat the Tigers then they would go onto a three team Super Regional. If a couple of things go in the right direction, the Supers could be in Chula Vista at Southwestern College. If that were to happen, it would be Southwestern, Canyons and Grossmont. For those that are not as positive, should the Griffins win, they would look to be in a Super Regional round with Orange Coast and Hancock.

ALL-CONFERENCE

Five Griffins were named to the All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference on Wednesday, with another four being named Honorable Mention.

Kyle Dobyns (6-2, 3.56 ERA, 69 K) was named one of the three All-PCAC Pitchers. Infielder Skyler Agnew (.286, 4 HR, 32 RBI) was named to the prestigious list. Broadie Romero (.383, 7 HR, 24 RBI) made the list as the designated hitter after going 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBI on the final day of the regular season. Meanwhile, outfielders Ethan Caschetta (.301, 8 HR, 28 RBI) and Luke Denos (.319, 3 HR, 33 RBI) closed out the All-PCAC list.

Nevan Noonan (.252, 8 HR, 33 RBI) and Luke Mansy (.315, 3 HR, 26 RBI) finished their freshmen seasons on the honorable mention list. On the mound, Ethan Heider (6-2, 4.14 ERA, 52K) and the reigning PCAC Male Athlete of the Week Bradley Barkley (1-2, 7 Saves, 3.15 ERA) were named honorable mentions as well. Barkley registered the only complete game and shutout for the Griffins this season.
