EL CAJON — In a game that saw everything from clutch threes to overtime, the Griffins came out on top with a 94-86 overtime victory over the MiraCosta Spartans in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Friday, Feb. 10 inside the Griffin Arena.

Just a little more than two minutes into the game, the game went in a direction that no one saw coming.  As the Griffins (9-16, 4-10 PCAC) were getting ready to inbound the ball from a simple deflected pass out of bounds, things got physical.

A Griffin and Spartan (12-14, 5-9 PCAC) were jockeying for position, like every other out of bounds play that has been viewed all season long.  The difference in this play however was that the Spartan seemed to have complete control of the Griffin.  The taller 6' 8" Spartan seemed to have his arms wrapped up in the 6' 2" Griffin in such a way that he could control where the two players would go.  They ended up in the bleachers and an altercation was visible to the officials, earning both players technical fouls and early showers as they were both ejected.

The rest of the first half was very tightly officiated to keep things under control.  As far as the other ten people on the court, Samuel Stewart IV put up 10 points in the opening half to lead the Griffins and all scorers at intermission and helped GC to a 42-31 lead.

In the second half, MiraCosta was shooting lights out hitting at nearly a 50-percent clip and outscored the Griffins 45-34.  Stewart IV put another 16 points up and Brandon Tully (29 points for the game) added another 10.  Meanwhile, Kobe Smith for MiraCosta poured in 21 points (33 for the game-high in scoring) to help lead the Spartan comeback.

With the score tied at 76-all at the end of 40 minutes, the combatants went to a five-minute overtime period.

Tully was 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the extra period to lead the Griffins to the victory.  Only Stewart IV was the only other player who scored five or more points in the overtime period.

"That was a heckuva win," assistant coach Kyle Ruiz said.  "We just have to figure out now what the punishment is for the ejection in the first half."

The Griffins will host Imperial Valley (0-23, 0-13 PCAC) on Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Griffin Arena.  The game was originally scheduled to be played on Monday, Jan. 30.  Due to weather conditions that Imperial Valley would have to deal with both coming to and going home from the game, safety advised both squads to postpone their matchup at that time.
