Game #1 vs. Rio Hondo
Summary
Grossmont College Griffins built a five-run lead in the second inning and then held off Rio Hondo's charge for a 5-3 victory over the Road Runners Friday, September 20. Rio Hondo scored three runs in the failed comeback on a sacrifice fly in the third, a triple by another player, and a single in the fourth by another Roadrunner. Mershon got the start for Grossmont college and the win. She lasted four innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two Road Runners. The offensive onslaught by Grossmont College was led by Gomez, Schlichting, and Olson, all driving in runs in the inning. Schlichting went 3 -for-3 at the plate to lead Grossmont College hits.
1st inning:
Dakotta Mershon started on the mound for the Griffins. Griffins walked the first batter for the Road Runners. However, the Griffins quickly turned it around with 3 put outs to the infield to end the inning. Mershon started the inning with a fly out to shortstop. Jazmine Gomez drives the first pitch hard up the middle for a single. Sierra Marty flew out to shortstop on the first pitch. During the bottom of the first, the Griffins got things moving when Sierra Schlichting double on a 1-0 count, scoring Gomez from first who got on with a hard single up the middle. Kelly Olson hit a double to the left center gap moving Schlichting to 3rd base. Olson and Schlichting were left on base at the end of the inning. Chloe Holstad grounds out to third leaving 2 runners on base.
2nd inning:
Mershon on the mound retired 2 of the Road Runners allowing one on base with a walk and another the third out with a put out back to Mershon. Griffins notched four runs in the second inning. Kristian Angeles got the inning started with a hard single up the middle. Ashley Nelson pinch runs for Angeles and advances to third on a steal and a pass ball. Kim Garcia goes deep into the count but draws a strikeout looking with Nelson on third. Followed up Lexi Schmehr and Mershon were walking to load the bases. Melissa Gutierrez hits a pop up to the pitcher leaving runners on base.
Next up, Gomez had a hard hit to the 5-6-hole driving Angeles and Schmehr in. Runners on second and third, Marty draws the walk to load the bases with Schlichting at the plate. Schlichting drove the ball into left field scoring Mershon and Gomez. Olson ends the ending with a line drive to the second basemen.
3rd inning:
Road Runners scored two runs this inning. Lead off Road Runner hits a single into left center and advances later on a wild pitch. The next batter for the road runners hits the ball in the 5-6-hole in which Griffins attempted to get the lead runner out at third but failed due to an error. Third batter of the inning hits a sacrifice fly to left field allowing lead off hitter to score. Next Road runner drives the ball into the 5-6-hole for a single but later advance to third and attempts home but is thrown out on a hit to Jamie Medlin with the assist of Angeles behind the plate and Olson for the pick off at third. Quick inning for the Griffins with Holstad strikeout out swing followed by Angeles flying out to right field and Garcia grounding out to second base.
4th inning:
Road Runners start the inning with a single between the left field and shortstop. This player later on advances to third around the bases on wild pitches and pass bases. Second Road Runner batter for the inning draws a walk and advances to second on a wild pitch. Next batter of the inning hits a ball down the left field line for a single allowing for one run to score. However, left fielder Medlin throws out the runner from second attempting to advance to third with Schlichting to assist. Next Road Runner, hits the ball to second base advancing previous runner to third base. Fifth hitter for the road runner ends the inning with a fly out to Medlin in left field.
Another quick inning by the Griffins in the bottom of the 4th, Schmehr leads off the inning with a hit to first base with the unassisted. Gutierrez bunts the ball for a single. Gutierrez is caught stealing and throw out by the Road Runners catcher. Mershon ends the inning with a ground out to the third basemen.
5th inning:
Road Runners start of the inning with a hit back to the Shenefield with an error. The lead off batter advances to second on a wild pitch and attempts to third on a steal but is thrown out by Angeles with assist by Gomez. Next batter for the Road Runners grounds out to third for the second out of the inning. Third batter for the inning flies out to Marty in right field for the third out of the inning.
Gomez starts the inning with a sneaky bunt to first but is thrown out with the second base assist on the play. Marty lines out second basemen. Schlichting hits a shot up the middle for the single then advances on the second basemen on an error overthrow to first base. Olson flies out to right field leaving Schlichting stranded on second.
6th inning:
Road Runner leads off with a single into the right center gap. Next batter for the Road Runners hits a one hop to short stop allowing the Griffins to get the lead runner at second for the first out of the inning. Third batter of the inning hits a gapper to right center gap for a single advancing teammate road runner from first to third. Fourth batter of the inning, flies shallow to right field for the second out of the inning, no runners advance. The next road runner hits the ball to Jessica Medlin at first base for an unassisted for the third out of the inning.
Time runs out and the game is called at 5-3 with the win for the Griffins.
Game #2 vs. Rio Hondo
Summary.
Schmehr toed the rubber for Grossmont College Griffin's allowing five hits and seven runs over two innings. Nelson came in during third inning. Jessica Medlin, Sabina Quesada, Holdstad, Rainee Foster, and Melody Rodriguez all had one hit to lead Grossmont College. Rio Hondo saw the ball well today, racking up nine hits in the game. Griffins lose 7-3.
1st inning:
Schemhr started on the mound for the Griffins for game 2. Road Runners start the inning off with the lead off batter getting on by an HBP. The next batter for the Road Runners sacrificed bunt the lead off runner advancing her teammate. However, the Road Runners attempted to take two bases on the sacrifice bunt and were caught advancing to third by the Griffins second basemen Danica Crews to gain the second out of the inning with left fielder Jamie Medlin covering the base. Road Runner walk the next better followed by a single, however, come up scoreless as Schmehr strikes out the fifth batter of the inning. Road Runners have a fast 1-2-3 inning allowing no hits, no errors, 2two put outs by second and third basemen, along with one strikeout.
2nd inning:
Schmehr on the mound retired 2 of the Road Runners allowing one on base with a walk and another the out with a line drive to Crews at second. Griffins started off the inning hot with a lead off triple by Jessica Medlin in the 4th spot. Next batter for the Griffins, Rainee Foster, found the 3-4-hole for a single scoring Medlin from third for the first run of the game. The Road Runners quickly responded back striking out Holstad and Shenefield. Melody Rodriquez gained the walk to advance Foster to second. Road runner third basemen ends the inning with a put out to first from Sabina Quesada leaving two runners on base.
3rd inning:
Road Runners start the inning with a walk. Road Runners hit back to back singles scoring 3 runs. Griffins struggled to gain control of the inning allow for an error on third basemen allowing another Road Runner to score. Road Runners continued to hit Schmehr hard gaining two more runs before retiring. Schmehr throws 80 pitches before retiring handing off the ball to Ashley Nelson in the top of third. Nelson allows for one run to score against the Griffins. The Griffins gain control of the inning finally getting out of the inning. Road Runners kept the momentum going to have a quick two ground outs and strikeout to end the inning against the Griffins.
4th inning:
Road runners start the inning off with a fly out to short stop. Road runner gain a runner due to an error on Olson at third base. Nelson responded back with striking out the next batter for the Road Runners for the second out. Nelson gives up a hit to center field advancing and runners to second and first. Nelson gets out of the inning with a putout by Quesada at shortstop.
Griffins start the inning off with Jamie Medlin line driving back to the pitcher for the first out. Alexa Henderson and Jessican Medlin were unable to produce any hits this inning resulting in a fast three outs.
5th inning:
Road Runners start the inning with a walk. Girffins quickly shut the following Road Runners down with a fly out to Garcia (left field) and Olson (center field). Jessica Medlin throws out one of the Rod Runners attempt to second with Quesada for the final out of the inning.
Foster starts the inning with a hard hit to third basemen who over throws the ball to first base allowing Foster to gain an extra base. Schmehr pinch hits for Holstad driving the ball up the middle for a stand-up double to score Foster. Rodriquez kept the momentum going with a fielder's choice to short stop to get lead runner Schmehr out for the first out. Rodriquez advances to second on a pass ball allowing Quesada to drive teammate in with a line drive up the left field line for a double. Crews finishes the inning with a hit back to the pitcher for the final out of the inning.
6th inning:
Road Runners started off the inning with a single up the middle. Griffins respond back quickly with Quesada making all three outs of the inning including a diving catch behind first base. Road Runners shut down the Griffins with two fly outs to shortstop and a dine drive to second base to end the game.
Time runs out and the game is called at 7-3 with the win for the Road Runners.
