Coach Brooke Callahan returns fall 2019 for her second year with Grossmont College women's volleyball. She has taken on a bigger role this season, training the team daily in offensive and blocking scenarios alongside head coach Jamie Ivers. Callahan is chasing the indoor conference championship this fall, and shares that she is hungry (really hungry!) for another state championship after Grossmont's beach volleyball's state title in spring 2019.
Callahan also shares her insight on some players that will lead the team this year, like returning sophomores Haley Morton, Shaney Lipscomb and Carly Gonzalez.
Haley Morton returns this season as a more experienced 5'7 setter out of Curtis High in University Place, Washington. Morton competed in indoor fall 2018, where she tallied 475 assists and trained with the spring 2019 beach state championship team.
Shaney Lipscomb is a towering bounce-back (University of Hawaii) originally from San Diego. Standing at 6'2, Lipscomb is an explosive outside hitter and opposite. In 2018 she totaled 363 kills, 53 service aces and 199 digs. She also holds the beach state championship, having competed as part of the 5s team spring 2019.
Carly Gonzalez gets back onto the court this season after playing in 2017 and rehabilitating an injury during the 2018 season. After red-shirting last season, Gonzalez is ready to hit. She is 5'11 and a Bonita Vista High alumni out of Chula Vista.
Coach Callahan also shares, "We have some freshman studs this year." Sydney Frigerio out of Bishops High is the first name she drops. Then Brooklyn Anderson from Oregon and also Kortney Hitt.
Sydney Frigerio comes to Grossmont from Bishops High as a 5'7 setter. She has diabolical skill and consistency, always setting up her teammates for success.
Out of Bend High comes 6'0 middle hitter Brooklyn Anderson, joining the Griffin women from Oregon. At her height, Anderson's swing is dangerous.
Kortney Hitt is a "feisty libero," as described by coach Callahan. Hitt stands at 5'4 and is from Graham-Kapowsin High in Washington.
The Griffin women look to take back the conference title after a third place finish in 2018 and a championship in 2017 (Pacific Coast Athletic Conference). 2018 defending champions, San Diego Mesa, will not give it up easy. The Olympians prove to be Grossmont's biggest match-up this fall.
